Last month, Native News Online reported that President Joe Biden announced 13 new intended nominations for his administration, including Patrice Kunesh for Commissioner of the Administration for Native Americans (ANA), a program office within the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
Kunesh, a Standing Rock Lakota descendant, is an attorney and policy advocate who has led a career in public service at tribal, state, and federal levels.
Currently, she works for the Native American Rights Fund, where she began her career as a public interest fellow after earning her JD at the University of Colorado Law School, then a Master of Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
If her nomination is confirmed, Kunesh would lead the ANA, which was established in 1974 through the Native American Programs Act. The administration works to support Native American communities by providing financial assistance and capacity building, gathering and sharing data, and advocating for improved policies within Health and Human Services and across the federal government.
