Indigenous & Gothic Boutique sells art and accessories that are traditionally made and uniquely crafted. The business started after the owner, Kalvin Satiacum, tried working for his Tribe but it ended up not working out.
Since the money he receives from Tribal welfare doesn’t cover all of his bills and expenses, creating art became a way for him to make a living.
Kalvin crafts necklaces, paintings, and medicine bags that can be bought on his website. Even though he does this to make money, he imbues his art with traditional knowledge and meanings and continues to work on that.
His art and work has been his approach to dealing with the adverse effects of colonial society. While he has been dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression and dysthymia, he believes everything goes in cycles and that it can’t rain all the time.
Each piece of his artwork is centered around self-acceptance, self-love and self-protection: spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Aside from being a business owner, he also lives with his three dogs and strives to be a rock star, so he dresses the part.
You can find his crafts and blog on his website, as well as stay up-to-date on his latest activities on Instagram.
